We need to mention MTHFR on our website since this is a growing area of interest and can be linked with potentially a myriad of health issues including the elusive diagnosis and a potential cause of fibromyalgia. Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is an enzyme responsible for converting folic acid (a B vitamin) to methylfolate (the usable form). Most B complex supplements have folic acid which if a person can't convert may end up with elevated blood levels of folic acid because they can't use it, then deficient in the usable form at the cellular level. Methylation is a very complex process, in a nutshell those with the gene polymophism are at high risk for elevated homocystine (a marker of inflammation and cardiac risk factor), and little or no glutathione (the body's most powerful antioxidant), and it all comes back to folic acid a B vitamin. There are multiple resources via google to learn about MTHFR polymorphism. Dan Pursur MD in Utah is looking at fibromyalgia and copper toxicity. Some of the conditions that treatment for MTHFR polymorphism have helped are: Depression, anxiety, memory loss, diabetic neuropathy, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, irritable bowel, migraine headache, Parkinson's, bipolar disorder, autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, and prevention of neural tube defects. Genetic testing is available, We use a company called Genesight.
Just an an FYI, B12 is often manufactured for sale in the form of cyanocobalamin. The cyano part of that is a cyanide molecule. We prefer methocobalamin for our patients which is the usable form.
The right diet? This is a tough one! Eat zero processed or refined foods, grow food without pesticides or buy organic. Unfortunately, our food supply including meat is loaded in pesticides, round-up (glycophosphate), antibiotics (kills our gut bacteria) and hormones (affects our hormone balance). Don't use plastic products to store or heat food or eat from plastic products (plastics affect our hormones and estrongenise men), don't drink from plastic bottles as it also releases estrones, air out the car before getting in a hot car because you are breathing estrones. New car smell: It's estrones. Processed bread: read the label because it may contain bromide (cheaper) instead of iodide. Bromide occupies the iodide receptor in the thyroid gland and negatively affects thyroid hormone production and incidentally is a carcinogen.
